It would be about 4 years after their first encounter in 2006 that Kris and Chris would actually have their first date. The timing just didn’t work out until 2010 when they found themselves in a training class together at work. He was a technician and she was an engineer out at the Kennedy Space Center. They sat beside each other and started talking. Their first get-together outside of work was a few days later at Buffalo Wild Wings. He was going through a rough time and wanted some company. A few weeks later they had a real date – dinner at Three Amigos and a movie. Kris says it was cute because Chris brought along a mini list of the movie times that he had typed up in his pocket in case the dinner went well Looks Like it went really well!
Theirs is an awesome proposal story. Best told by Chris. So here are his words – mostly.
While we were in Indiana over the summer for my brother’s wedding, my mother and grandmother pulled me aside to discuss something with me. They said that they had decided to give me my grandmothers engagement ring from when she got married to my grandfather. It was stressed that they were not rushing me, and that they were not saying it had to be with Kris, although they did say that she was a perfect fit with our family. My parents have always tried to express that the ultimate decision was always mine in most everything I did growing up, and that was why she had said that. She did not want to make me feel pressured to do something I was not ready to do. At that time, I was not ready, but thanked them for the most gracious offer. A few months later, as we approached Thanksgiving, I knew I was ready to ask her. I decided I wanted to propose in the presence of my family that loves her so much and that I would ask while we were all at my parents the week of Christmas. After getting her father’s blessing, I arranged to have the ring at my parents’ house. It was a few days after Christmas and we were hanging out watching TV. I had the ring in my pocket and was mustering the courage to ask her, when a commercial came on involving a marriage proposal. Kris said to me, “You should propose to me like that.” With the opening she had just given me, I responded by saying, “Well what if I did it by telling you…..” and I went into telling her how important she is to me and how happy I am with her in my life, how well she fits into the family and how I could never see myself being happy without her by my side. She told me that would be amazing if I proposed that way. She still didn’t realize I was doing anything other than replying to her proposal comment. That was when I pulled the ring from my pocket and asked if she would marry me. It took her a moment to process what had just happened as it could not have even been planned to work out that smoothly. She cried so hard that I actually wasn’t sure if she was saying yes! She finally tells me how amazingly happy and shocked that she is, and says yes. She cried even more when I told her where the ring came from. We then both went to announce the news to everyone that was still awake.
Amazing, huh? Since the Space Center was so important to their relationship, part of their getting-to-know-you session took place there. Mike started out with them around Lake Eola and ended up out on the Space Coast to help preserve some incredible memories for Kris & Chris.
