For those that say they have none, well, they struggle with the truth and honesty. Just sayin’! Some of our struggles are private and hidden, and others are out there for the world to see. Some struggles come and go, and others hang around, nagging us every day. (And, oh, do I have many!!)

For Sarah, her struggle was to find herself, hidden under some extra weight. So in July of 2010, she had surgery to assist in that quest. Well, in the process of finding herself, she lost a lot of herself – over 150 lbs! Nice job! Sarah has learned to love what’s left of her, and she says there’s more to go. She made the change for herself and her Mamma, and because she was tired of hiding behind others and their happiness. It was time to find her own!

Sarah had known of us for a while, but she said she was nervous about reaching out and then even more nervous to meet us. Sarah came to us because she wanted to document this incredible time in her transformation. Her fears were put at ease when she did finally meet with us. We formed a friendship and a level of trust that allowed Sarah to be comfortable during her session. We met up with her last summer and chatted for a while to get to know her and her story. It’s just part of what we do – getting to know people. We laughed and cried and I was so excited about her and her spirit. I loved everything about Sarah and felt deeply honored she had chosen us to tell her story. I wanted to make this experience extra special, so I enlisted the help of the insanely talented Kate Herndon to give Miss Sarah the royal treatment so she could could feel and be treated like the princess that she is. Now, she was a little nervous, but she still trusted us and had an amazing time. She says Mike made her “laugh and cry in the same frame craziness”. She learned so much about herself and now feels more confident and beautiful! Sarah, you are beautiful – inside and out!

Mike and Kate spent an afternoon with Sarah in White Springs for her session. She totally rocked numerous outfits and looked beyond amazing!

We are so honored to have been a part of this most amazing time for them and their families. They chose to marry in St Augustine because of all the wonderful memories they already have in this historic city. It’s where Lake spent lots of time while growing up and it’s where  they courted over the years. It’s where Jeff proposed. It’s just a place they love and that’s near and dear to them. In regards to the Oldest House and Casa Monica Hotel, they both just knew instantly that’s where they would marry and celebrate after visiting each for the first time.  Both are so historical and so beautiful themselves that they didn’t feel it necessary to decorate much since they are just so naturally beautiful, just as Lake & Jeff are. I asked Lake to answer a few questions about their day. Read below to see what she had to say!

Oldest House Wedding and Casa Monica Reception Photographers Mike & Ann | Visual Storytellers

What was the most memorable moment of you wedding day? I would say the most memorable moment for me in particular was when I was standing by myself right before I was going to walk down the aisle.  I was waiting for my dad to come back from walking with my mom and I just was able to stand there in peace and take a deep breath and watch Jeff from behind and see everyone although they couldn’t see me.  I felt like I was in my own little world, in my own little fairytale or movie (as cheesy as it sounds).  I loved just looking around and seeing Jeff surrounded by all the people I love and just watching them and taking it all in.

What was most unexpected about your day? I would say my most unexpected moment would be that I never felt nervous really.  I feel like you always hear how people are nervous and you always see on movies the brides freaking out a little right before they walk down the aisle.  I knew I would never freak out, but I thought I might be more nervous or stressed or something.  I just felt so at ease and relaxed the whole day.  I never was nervous just so very excited.  It was so nice to be able to just sit back and really enjoy every moment and not have to worry about anything.

What excites you most about being married to Jeff? Just being his wife and starting our lives together.  I cannot wait to see what is in store for us from moving in to our new home to starting a family one day and watching Jeff become the wonderful father and husband I know he is going to be.  I just can’t wait for everything that is to come and for him to be right by my side the whole time through the crazy roller coaster of life.

What advice would you give other newly engaged couples in regards to wedding and/or marriage planning? Enjoy every minute and every detail of the whole ride.  I remember meeting you and Mike and ya’ll telling us to enjoy it and to remember what it is all about and to not forget about each other.  That was such wonderful advice.  Remember each other through all the crazy planning and stress.  Remember to date and don’t forget why you are getting married to each other in the first place.  It isn’t about the wedding day, it is about the marriage.  You and Mike made sure we didn’t forget that and it is so important so remember what it is all truly all about.

After some food, drinks and time with friends, the Dave Matthews Tribute Band took the stage to play a private show.  Jonathan unexpectedly joined the band for the first set on electric guitar and closed the first set with a rousing rending of All Along the Watchtower.  The event raised thousands for a great cause and next year’s event will be even better! Make plans to be there for this awesome event for a worthwhile cause.

However, the mom did find us online from Tampa and was drawn to our authentic style of capturing kids being kids and documenting not only what people look like, but who they are and the relationships around them. Mike met them out at Isleworth for a fun session with the family and grandparents. The morning grass was a little too wet and messy for the little ones, but we created some great images, nonetheless! What precious little girls :)

We are not guaranteed next week or even tomorrow. All we have is right now, the very present moment in which we are living. And it should be appreciated and treasured. We should be present to the life and love that is around us. Curve balls are not necessarily bad things. They just are. They are there to keep us on our toes and aware in the game of life. Too many of us just go through the motions on a daily basis, often not truly seeing what’s right in front of us (guilty!). Curve balls can wake us up and change the whole game. We get to stop, regroup and put together a new plan.

This family got a curve ball recently and it has probably changed the game some. Things may be a little different, sometimes challenging and probably even a little better. A crisis will often bring people even closer together – families closer together. One thing this family has done is to document what’s important. We’ve followed them through Asa’s first year and been able to see all three kids grow and change so much over the last 12 months. What a blessing it is to have been able to photograph this family at this time in their lives, to capture such an important chapter as they begin yet a new one. We have enjoyed getting to know them and wish them only the very best as they continue to grow.

What a beautiful family! We were thrilled when they asked us to document their newborn daughter, Molly, who came into the world in February as a leap-year baby. She obviously was holding out for something special, and her birthdate certainly qualifies.  She has something else special in that Miss Lilla is her big sister. What a wonderful friendship these two have in store!

The foundation of everything we do is capturing and documenting relationships. We want to capture what’s significant and sentimental. The relationships in this home are very significant. This home itself is significant and all that is in it – Molly’s nursery , her crib, her outfits and cute hats. Her family. Not props. No “babies in bowls” here. Only babies being cradled by the people that love them. That’s what’s important. That’s what matters. People and relationships matter and are worth documenting. Thank you, Rob & Andrea, for inviting us to document what’s most important to you.

This is a church where many other important weddings have happened in Jenna’s life including her grandmother’s, father’s and matrons of honors’ weddings. It’s so wonderful that the church is not only beautiful, but holds so many dear memories. The weather could not have been more perfect, either!

After the ceremony, everyone made their way over to the Emory Conference Center to celebrate with the new Mr & Mrs Kennedy. The newlyweds made their way over in style in Patrick’s dad’s  ’57 Chevy Bel Air. What a gorgeous car! It sure made for a fantastic ride for Jenna & Patrick, especially with Patrick’s dad sporting the chauffeur hat. The best part of the evening was Patrick professing his love for Jenna and welcoming her to the family through a poem he had beautifully written. Patrick proposed to Jenna reading a poem he wrote while standing at the tree he had carved their initials in down in Piedmont Park. We were delighted to be able to document this amazing time for them. We were also there to capture the very creation of this family as Jill & Jonathan became husband & wife in 2010. Marie Selby Botanical Gardens wedding photographers Mike & Ann | Visual Storytellers

The wedding day itself was very relaxed (no bridezilla here). Kate’s girls are all so close and there were so many inside jokes throughout the day. Kate and Brian wrote their own vows and read them to each other during the ceremony, which was incredibly beautiful and emotional. The venue is breathtakingly gorgeous and was the perfect place to capture their love and connection. Kate & Brian chose to do a first look which was nothing short of amazing. It’s always the groom that can’t hold it together, and Brian was no exception. And I love it! The look on his face when he saw Kate was really just so touching.  He was a bit overcome by the moment and the sight of the woman who he was about to make his wife. His embrace was very telling. My favorite detail of their day was the dictionary used as their guestbook. It was so fitting in so many ways and goes well with another inside joke – just CFD.

Mike is literally giddy every time he knows he has a session with this most adorable family.

Baby Ruby was brought into the world at the end of January to three (yes 3!) siblings under 4. That makes 4 under 4 :)  To know this family is to know organized chaos, so to speak, but also to know complete love and acceptance. To know that each child has a place to be – to be themselves. To know parents that dream of nothing more than raising a family full of love and lots of kids – and kids that know God. There’s a certain comfort in knowing that your children know their Creator. There’s also a respect that they will show others and the world. It is OUR responsibility as parents to teach our children, and this family is doing just that.  We just can’t wait to see what’s in store for precious Ruby and her family this next year!
